read the course description. take what it says about prerequisites seriously. if it says that you need linear algebra, then you need linear algebta; you can't wing it. still don't understand the course description? set up an appointment, and go meet a departmental advisor, but make a list of questions first. still confused? discuss the course with senior students who have taken the course.
