Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur :?
Out of 45 courses that you will do at IITK, about 40 will be completely useless according to your definition of uselessness, that is, the topics covered in those courses will not be used in a typical career. But that is not how the undergraduate programs should be looked at. They are more meant to broaden your horizons than to be useful in a direct way. Knowing a broad range of subjects help you tremendously in your career. You do not know what all you will need to do in the next 50 years. It is clear that hardly anyone will make use of anything taught in a UG program 50 years later. What you will use will be what you would have learn on the job. And having an exposure to diverse things actually cause you to learn how to learn. Having said that, the broadening of horizons theory would still be satisfied if you were not asked to do TA101 but asked to do any other type of course. The chances are you will still be dissatisfied with that course, and it is administratively convenient to offer at least a few courses common to entire batch. So you might as well be dissatisfied with this course. :-)
